Five Generations of Service
Heinrich (Henry) Wimberg founded the business in Egg Harbor City, Atlantic County, New Jersey. A German Immigrant, Henry manufactured cigar boxes, cabinets, coffins and became a builder and contractor. He was Chief of Egg Harbor Volunteer Fire Department and hung a humble sign “H. Wimberg - Undertaker” on the roof of his front porch in 1881.
His son Henry Jr. was helping in the business in 1895 and took over when his father died in 1912. Henry Jr. had ten children, seven of whom were closely connected to the family calling. Although, like so many others, there was great suffering during the depression in 1929, the business was able to continue and later grow.
Henry Jr.’s eldest son, George H. Wimberg Sr. opened the Ventnor City mortuary in 1935. Serving the families of South Jersey with respect and compassion he was elected as a public servant, Atlantic County Coroner. Two of his brothers, Chester and Larry, were also morticians and served the communities of Ocean City, Egg Harbor City and the surrounding area.
George H. Wimberg’s son, George H. Wimberg Jr. continued his father’s service after his graduation from Villanova University and Eckles College of Mortuary Science in 1959. With the death of his dad in 1971, George took over and helped to grow the business with dignity. In 1979 with an additional funeral home on the mainland, the communities of Linwood, Egg Harbor Township, Northfield, and Somers Point are now being served by the Wimberg Family.
Credit for the continuation of the funeral profession is now given to George’s son George H. Wimberg III. George III came into the business with his dad in 1985 after his graduation from Mercer Community College. He is now Manager of both the Ventnor and the Linwood facilities. George III continues the long family tradition of funeral service that his Great Great Grandfather began during the nineteenth century.
